About half of the Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine were subjected to torture and ill-treatment, Volker Türk, head of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said at the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on March 30.
Türk said that about half of the interviewed POWs reported that they had been tortured or ill-treated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Most of the mistreatment took place shortly after capture. At the same time, there is no information about systematic practices of ill-treatment in places of permanent detention at the UN.
Russia reported multiple cases of torture of POWs by the Ukrainian militants. In Ukraine, Russian servicemen had their teeth knocked out, bones broken, deprived of sleep for 10 days, and were brutally beaten with a garbage bag over their heads.
It was also reported that in Ukraine prisoners of war were tortured for refusing to sing the Ukrainian anthem.
One of the tasks of the Russian special operation in Ukraine is to protect people subjected to persecution and genocide by the Kiev regime.
